There’s nothing quite like parking up near the ocean, rolling out the awning and stepping straight into a Kiwi summer. New Zealand offers some of the world’s most scenic beachside stays and magnificent views. Here’s a short guide to our favourite motorhome-friendly beaches around Aotearoa, with great access, nearby holiday parks PoP's or DOC campgrounds, and that unbeatable summer vibe. This list is by no means exhaustive and we are bound to have missed some great spots. If you have any recommended spots please let us know. North Island Coastal Favourites Waipū Beach (Northland) Golden sand, rolling surf, and a relaxed coastal feel make Waipū a summer classic. Stay: Camp Waipu Cove offers beachfront powered sites ideal for RVs. Why RVers love it: Easy access, great swimming, and walking distance to cafés. Uretiti Beach (Northland) A long, sandy stretch perfect for fishing, surfing, and peaceful beach walks. Stay: Uretiti Beach Campsite (DOC) accommodates self-contained motorhomes. Pro tip: Book ahead in peak January — this spot fills fast. Piha Beach (Auckland West Coast) Wild, dramatic black sand and powerful surf make Piha iconic. Stay: Piha Motor Camp is an easy walk to the beach. Best for: RVers wanting rugged scenery close to Auckland. Mount Maunganui (Bay of Plenty) One of NZ’s most popular summer beach towns, with calm swimming areas and great surf. Stay: There is a number of PoP's and Freedom Camping sites within the area. Ōhope Beach (Bay of Plenty) Consistently voted one of NZ’s favourite family beaches — wide, safe, and sunny. Stay: Ōhope Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park provides powered RV sites steps from the sand. Great for: Long summer stays with full facilities. Raglan Beach (Waikato) Known for its relaxed surf town vibe and world-class left-hand breaks, Raglan is perfect for surfers and beach lovers alike. Stay: Raglan Holiday Park is a popular base for RV travellers wanting access to the beach and town amenities. Hahei Beach (Coromandel Peninsula) White sand and turquoise water near Cathedral Cove. Stay: Hahei Holiday Resort is motorhome-friendly and centrally located. Ideal for: Scenic kayaking and coastal walks. South Island Standouts Tōtaranui Beach (Tasman Region) Golden sands framed by native bush in one of NZ’s most beautiful national parks. Stay: Tōtaranui Campsite (DOC) welcomes campervans (booking essential in summer). Highlight: Kayak the Abel Tasman coastline straight from your campsite. Kaiteriteri Beach (Tasman Region) A gorgeous golden-sand beach with calm swimming waters and great coastal walks near Abel Tasman National Park. Stay: Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Campground has plenty of powered sites right by the beach — an ideal base for kayaking, beach days and exploring the park. Wharariki Beach (Tasman Region) One of the South Island’s most iconic beaches — wide white sand fringed by dunes and dramatic rock formations that are stunning at sunset. Stay: Nearby Wharariki Beach Holiday Park caters well to campervans and motorhomes and keeps you close to the dunes and walking tracks. Pukatea/Whites Bay (Marlborough) A turquoise bay with safe swimming and gentle waters — perfect for a relaxed beach day after exploring the Sounds. Stay: The Whites Bay DOC campsite offers space for self-contained motorhomes right by the water. Momorangi Bay (Marlborough Sounds) A sheltered bay that’s great for swimming, kayaking or just chilling with a coffee on the water. Stay: Momorangi Bay Campground (DOC) has powered and non-powered sites right by the beach — a peaceful stop on your Sounds route. Punakaiki / Gillespies Beach (West Coast) Not as traditional golden sand, but epic West Coast surf beaches worth exploring: Punakaiki Beach: Close to the Pancake Rocks and blowholes, with a beachfront campground right near the shore. Gillespies Beach: A wild, scenic option with huge sea views and a DOC site right at the water’s edge. Kaka Point Beach (Otago) Long sandy beach with good surf, swimming zones and superb wildlife-spotting (sea lions, penguins and more). Stay: Beachside motor camps in the Kaka Point area make this a relaxing and scenic overnight stop. Moeraki Boulders Beach (Otago) Not your usual swim beach, but a fascinating coastal spectacle of giant spherical boulders that make for unforgettable photos and shoreline strolls. Stay: Close to the beach is Moeraki Boulders Holiday Park, perfect for an overnight stop as part of your South Island loop. The Hampton NZMCA park is also close by. Monkey Island Beach (Southland) Remote, peaceful, and spectacular at sunset. Stay: Basic campground and nearby designated areas suit self-contained RVs.
