DOC and Scenic Camping Near Picton: Whatamango Bay A beautiful beachfront DOC campsite in the Queen Charlotte Sound with basic facilities. Perfect for swimming, fishing and relaxing right by the water. Cowshed Bay A more remote and peaceful campsite in the sounds, offering a classic off grid motorhome experience surrounded by nature. Freedom Camping Options: Alfred Stream Reserve A simple overnight stop with toilets and picnic areas. Suitable for self contained vehicles only and short stays. Freedom camping in central Picton is not permitted, so it’s important to check signage and local rules before parking up for the night. Helpful Tips: Book ahead during busy periods, especially over summer and ferry peak times. If arriving late off the ferry, staying at a holiday park is the easiest option. DOC sites are ideal for a quieter, more scenic stay. Always make sure your vehicle meets self containment requirements where needed. Practical Tips & Road Info: Roads around the Marlborough Sounds are narrow and winding, especially along Queen Charlotte Drive, so take it slow and drive to the conditions. Fuel up in Picton or nearby Blenheim before heading into remote areas & expect traffic around ferry times, as Picton is a busy ferry hub. Freedom camping is limited in town, so use designated areas and ensure your motorhome is self-contained. Mobile coverage can drop out in the sounds, so download maps before you go & travel earlier or later in the day to avoid peak traffic and enjoy a more relaxed drive. Evening Dining in Picton: Oxley’s Bar & Kitchen Waterfront dining with a relaxed modern atmosphere, offering seafood, steaks, and cocktails. A great spot for dinner overlooking the harbour. The Chartroom Restaurant Classic Kiwi dining with a focus on seafood and steak. A comfortable sit-down option close to the marina. Seumus’ Irish Bar Casual pub style meals with a lively atmosphere, often with live music and a good selection of drinks and hearty food. Most dining spots are within easy walking distance of the waterfront and marina area. Evenings can get busy when ferry services arrive, so booking ahead is recommended during peak travel periods. A lot of motorhome travelers enjoy grabbing dinner in town and then taking a quiet walk along the harbour afterwards. Comments are closed.
