Freedom camping in New Zealand means staying in a tent, caravan, campervan or motor vehicle on public land that has minimal or no facilities. This form of accommodation is free but comes with no access to electricity, toilets or showers at times. Make sure your motorhome is self-contained before exploring these options.
Kiwi Holiday Parks
You can stay at this group of over 50 holiday parks scattered throughout New Zealand. They have a minimum 3-star rating with communal kitchens, toilets, showers and laundries. Prices here vary slightly but are all affordable: $17 - $22 per adult, per night.
There are approximately 28 different Family Parks campgrounds in New Zealand. Here you will find powered and unpowered sites with ensuites, budget prices and 3-star minimum accommodation.
Finding the Best Tourist Attractions
Even travellers who just want serenity and alone-time would be foolish to miss out on the spectacular sights of New Zealand. Luckily for us, our favourite tourist attractions all have holiday parks nearby!
Fiordland National Park
Experience some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. This dramatic landscape of fiords was sculpted by glaciers, and you’ll be treated to cascades, islands, virgin rainforests, mountain peaks and stretching lakes. Just around the corner are the Milford Sound Lodge campervan sites!
This is your adventure-seeking capital. Surrounded by incredible landscapes, you can go bungee jumping, jet boating, white-water rafting, rock climbing, hiking, and so much more. This is also a good chance to taste incredible food and kick your feet up for a moment.
Luckily, there are a number RV parks around Queenstown that suit a most budgets. It’s definitely worth spending a few nights here but any more than that can get very expensive so keep this in mind when planning your itinerary.
Tongariro National Park
If you haven’t seen photos of this stunning national park, you’ve been missing out on inspiration. Close to glittering Lake Taupo, this site has been World Heritage listed due to its volcanic features and ancient cultural relevance.

Rotorua is one of the most active geothermal regions in the world with boiling mud pools, volcanic craters, steaming springs and geysers. You can take a walking tour through this story of creation and soak yourself in hot mineral springs. Your family will find countless caravan parks nearby so you can make your decision based on budget and location!
Locations Near Farm Stays
Farm stays are one-of-a-kind accommodation that offers a real taste of rustic Kiwi farm life. Your whole family will be able to pitch in and help out on the farm; feeding calves, mending fences, rounding up sheep. This is similar to a B&B with a few additional activities and memories to make.
